Gerald Oswald completed his studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, specialising in trumpet. He then deepened his knowledge of conducting and composition with Franz Cibulka at the Johann-Joseph-Fux Conservatory in Graz, at the Vienna Conservatory Private University and at the Claudio Monteverdi Conservatory in Bolzano with Thomas Doss. He also attended workshops with renowned musicians such as Jan Van der Roost, Jan Cober and Douglas Bostock.

Gerald Oswald is also active as a composer. His first works were published by OrchestralArt in 2008, and he has been working with the Mitropa publishing house (Hal Leonard MGB) since 2011. His compositions have been published by Symphonic Dimensions Publishing since 2023.

In addition to his work as a teacher of brass instruments and wind band conducting at the Erzherzog Johann Music School in Stainz and as bandmaster of the Groß-St. Florian Music Band, Gerald Oswald is also active as a lecturer in conducting and instrumentation for the wind band conducting programme at the Johann-Joseph-Fux Conservatory in Graz and for the Styrian Wind Music Association. He is also regularly invited to serve as a juror at composition, ensemble, solo and orchestra competitions.
